Writing/Essay/Journal
After years of studying and building permanent structures with a traditional architectural firm, Wil Natzel began using cardboard to create his own works of art that are “up, gone, then into the recycling.” Why do you suppose Wil prefers to use cardboard for his art? What are the pros and cons of working with cardboard?

Activity
Wil creates small, physical models of his work to get a sense of how his work will interact with the physical space it will occupy.

Using cereal boxes or other lightweight cardboard, create your own model of a physical space and objects to fill that space. It can be something as simple as a lofted bed in a bedroom, or something as involved as Wil’s “Convolution” installation in the SooVAC Gallery. How does making a model help to plan out the full-scale version of the work?
