Kurt Seaberg’s calendars have become much more than a calendar: they are book-like explorations of all aspects of Sami culture, from which he descends. He uses his own art, his artist father’s images, pictographs, photos, and bilingual text to give a rich picture of the people indigenous to Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.

Do a little of your own research on the Sami people. Pick three aspects of life you learned about the Sami and compare that to what you know about the indigenous people of your home state. How are they the same and how are they different?

Try to imitate Kurt’s ink-dot technique to make a pictograph of something that represents your cultural heritage. Pick a totemic object that has meaning to you and your culture. If there isn’t an obvious cultural symbol, invent your own.
