Writing/Essay/Journal
Jon Reischl uses layers of mixed media to create pieces that illustrate metacognition or “how we think about what we think.” He builds up, then removes layers, until he gets his final image.

Pick a person you know. In 45 seconds, write a list as long as you can with phrases and adjectives that come to mind about that person. Include all details that come to mind, even if they seem irrelevant, and try to write continuously for the full 45 seconds.

Activity
Spend some time reflecting on the list you wrote above. Discuss in small groups what that exercise tells you about your metacognition. Are you able to make sense out of everything you wrote down, or does some of it seem obscure and strange? Look again at Jon’s artwork. Are you able to make sense out of all of the images there, or is it relatively abstract?
