Artistic Director of the In the Heart of the Beast Puppet & Mask Theatre, Sandy Spieler views their East Lake Street space as a lighthouse for culture and community. Starting out as a puppeteer, Spieler now oversees productions and the theatre’s vast store of puppets. Activist and artist, Spieler helps spearhead the company’s popular MayDay Parade and Festival, which draws thousands of people into the streets of south Minneapolis to celebrate the end of winter and remind the public of our shared community connections. Whether through visual art and events or through theater, Spieler cherishes the instrumental role of art in bringing people together, honoring the intrinsic vibrancy and life found on East Lake Street.
