Mankwe demonstrates origins of beatboxing

Talented vocalist and multidisciplinary performer Mankwe Ndosi demonstrates the percussive vocal technique she learned from listening to her father’s Miriam Makeba records. Miriam Makeba was a well-known South African singer and activist, and you can find many of her videos on YouTube. We’ll hear much more from Mankwe in an upcoming mn original episode.

Mankwe works in voice, word and improvisation. She works to expand the vocabulary of singing and vocalization. She collaborates with musicians, dancers, MC’s, and artists of all kinds. She has been performing in the Twin Cities and in Chicago for more than 15 years, including studio and live touring work nationally and internationally with Atmosphere, Zach Bagaason, Nicole Mitchell and Douglas R. Ewart. She has received support from the American Composer’s Forum/McKnight Foundation, The Jerome Foundation, and the Minnesota State Arts Board.
