A pianist, arranger, conductor and educator, Phil Mattson is recognized as one of the top vocal jazz arrangers in the country. His distinguished career includes 2 Grammy nominations for his vocal sextet, the P.M. Singers, and recordings of his arrangements by internationally known singing groups including The Manhattan Transfer and The Real Group.
Where instrumental jazz is rooted in improvisation, the essence of vocal jazz lies in recreating a big band sound using vocals. Mattson’s incredibly intricate arrangements maximize harmonic interest and rhythmic delivery. His current vocal group, The Phil Mattson Singers, were joined in concert at The Artist’s Quarter in Saint Paul by renowned saxophonist Richie Cole.
